I really enjoyed the story. I didn't realize how bad it really was until hearing this.
If you love football (or soccer) and live in the US, this is a must listen too. Great interviews and insights mixed with Rog’s humor produces a series of episodes that are insightful and intriguing. If this was a book I would have called it a non stop “page turner” that you never want to finish. Simply brilliant. My only regret. I finished listening to all the episodes and have nothing to look forward too. Sad.😀⚽️
Thoroughly enjoyed. Top class
This is an entertaining and informative story about the disaster that was the US soccer team at the 1998 World Cup. As an American I remember how disappointed everyone was, but this is the real story. Great for everyone, whether you like soccer or not.
Absolutely amazing, funny, well spoken and very informative. I am a Canadian footy fan who can totally relate to a country that does not love this beautiful sport. How ever, from this recent World Cup I have had many “soccer” hating friends actually fall in love with the World Cup. I can absolutely relate to this podcast 100%.
Really great listen; Rog does a great job getting the real guts of what went down in 1998 and the leadup from all parties. Was my first time learning about all of the drama that went down but as a soccer fan, I really enjoyed it. Only annoying part was the ads - found listening to the same ad 3x per episode a bit much (although I was listening to all episodes back to back). Otherwise highly recommend!
Really a terrific series and worth listening to. Excellent work!
A real must listen for any US Soccer fan or a fan of soccer in general. Great insider look and I couldn't stop listening.
Thank you so much for this, Rog and the WNYC team.
A mediocre soccer team performed mediocre in a World Cup and struggled with some team dynamics. Not particularly calamitous, intriguing or novel. 2.5 stars
Thank you so much for creating such a gripping and entertaining story! I am now gaining a healthy appreciation of a game that has frustrated me forever!
Thought I would find an interesting deep-dive on a topic I already knew well, and listen to one every weekend for a while. Wrong. I got completely hooked by Roger's storytelling, delivery, and sly sarcasm. Binged it in three days. I haven't enjoyed soccer this much since Archie Gemmill scored against Holland in 1978. I even loved the over-enthusiastic American podcast host act he puts on for the ad reads. I actually listened instead of fast-forwarding them! As a Brit it must have killed him to do it. Courage.
There are 5 rules that can be applied to almost every Chuck Norris movie. Rule 1: Chuck Norris never reloads Rule 2: Chuck Norris always hits first Rule 3: You can't run or hide from Chuck Norris Rule 4: Everything he touches becomes a weapon Rule 5: Chuck Norris never misses his targets
Listen to this and you’ll just feel better about everything. You’ll learn things about life and football. Rog and his team make what would otherwise be a good tale... a wonderful tale. Superb research coupled with one of the most soothing voices and crispest storytellers out there. Thank you.
I'm not much of a football fan but this is an enthralling listen. To hear the systemic failings that have hampered the US men's team, excellent work. GB
Simply brilliant GB
As an English fan I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy this, but Roger Bennett is a fabulous storyteller - and what a story of dreams dashed on the jagged rocks of footballing reality. American Fiasco is about football, but, in a wider sense, it is about what can go wrong when a ‘leader’ doesn’t genuinely understand what he is managing and gets it all wrong. Positively Shakespearean stuff! GB
The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.
