Against the Rules with Michael Lewis Reviews
Your yellow logo makes me hurt. Surely it’s a joke, right? But the podcast is everything you’d expect from Lewis. Compelling storytelling with his investigative twist. Bravo.

I am biased: I’ve loved every Michael Lewis book I’ve picked up since Liars’ Poker. I’ve been bewitched watching his interviews on Newshour or listening to his reporting on this American Life. What this podcast is: A Michael Lewis look at the author’s identified change in American attitude towards fairness and the people in charge of its enforcement. The series launches with a look at NBA reffing as an analogy for ideas to come. Criticisms: “sports talk” (?) - Michael Lewis himself offers that he is a little less than a casual fan of the NBA and very little of the content is about basketball. Please dear listeners use your meta-analytical skills and extrapolate! “Language” - this is likely fair; there should probably be an explicit flag. Yet he’s no sailor and maybe one or two explicit words will he dropped. Still, Michael Lewis is Michael Lewis and not really a writer/reporter/podcaster for kids. “Elizabeth Warren”? - She’s literally brought in to talk about the CFPB!! An organization she helped found... Summary: People are dumb, this podcast is good.
Dear Michael, My eight year old was secretly listening to your second program, while he appeared to be playing a video game, and asked what I thought was an astute question: “Why is that guy talking about big companies acting badly and the advertising for other big companies that probably rip people off.” Good question! I was wondering the same thing. LinkedIn and a toothbrush company? And what toothbrush does the ADA NOT endorse? And isn’t LinkedIn part of the very same oligarchy you are complaining about. I appreciate your journalism, but the rage I’m supposed to feel gets sadly diluted by the huckster/insider feel of this podcast. Oh and one last thing: in the first episode you mentioned how NBA referees could earn 500k if they were good and got the best games. You said:” there are easier ways to make that kind of money without people yelling at you.” Really? Which jobs are those? For the millions of minimum wage workers who are routinely made to feel unvalued, this statement was seriously out of touch to anyone outside of the 1%.
Michael Lewis has the cut-through cleverness in understanding society, that we all wish we had.
