Disturbing Yet IntriguingAlthough the topics are morbid and macabre, it’s nearly impossible to turn down Aaron Mahnke’s soothing voice in his podcast Lore. This non-fiction horror podcast began on March 18th, 2015 as an experiment of sorts. Mahnke was a graphic designer who wrote supernatural thrillers in his spare time. He would take bits of interestingly horrific parts of our worlds history and insert them into his writing. Mahnke eventually realized that he had leftover research and, wanting to gain more of an audience, decided to write essays about them and record them. He asked a friend if he should release them as a podcast, but the friend said no, that it wasn’t true to what podcasting was. Mahnke started releasing them anyways, and I am so glad he did. He is currently writing and producing three podcasts: Lore, Unobscured, and Cabinet of Curiosities. Episodes of Lore are broken up into segments by mildly unsettling music, much like an essay is broken into different paragraphs. The first is a short real-life story about what the episode is going to be without fully revealing the topic, followed by five or six segments going over the history of the topic and through Mahnke’s research. The first that I listened to was episode 121: Uninvited Guest. It was about parasites, the origination of the word (which I learned actually came from ancient Egypt), followed by well-researched stories that showed examples of how scientists discovered that a parasite is a parasite. It was horrifying to learn about the experiments conducted, and to what lengths the scientists went to prove theories about what a parasite really is. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say that there was a lot of eating things that people should never be eating. The second episode I listened to was 122: The Shortest Straw. This episode touched on what lengths a person would go to survive, through specific examples of the ‘custom of the sea’ among ship-wreaked sailors. The ‘custom of the sea’ is a cannibalistic practise in which the sailors will draw straws, or whatever other items were at their disposal. The unlucky fellow who drew the shortest would become food for the others, and the person to draw the second shortest was the butcher. The rest of the episode gave historical examples of this custom, as well as what those on the mainland did to create laws against it. The whole episode gave me chills, it was intriguing yet deeply disturbing. As a vegetarian, I tried to put myself in the position of those sailors. Would I also partake in the custom to survive? Would I plan to go off in search of vegetation if possible? I don’t think I ever want to know the answers. As for the advertising, Mahnke made the transition from story to ads very smooth. He’s sponsored by some of the usual companies for podcasts, like Casper Mattress and Squarespace. I would rate this podcast at 4.5/5 stars. Overall, the content was incredible. Mahnke did very in-depth research and made sure the listener could understand what he was talking about. He never used words I couldn’t understand without first explaining them, and his voice was very calm and smooth. I could listen to him talk all day. The subjects that Mahnke covers are ones that I didn’t know about or didn’t know the full story behind. The only thing that confused me for a moment was the story at the beginning of the episodes, as I didn’t quite understand what it was about right away. Nonetheless, they are interesting are very well thought out.
