Simply put, this is the best season of any show in the history of television.This season absolutely destroyed my expectations for television. Only Mad Men has come close to the depth of character and flat out drama of this fourth season. El Wire (?)By far the worse of the 4 seasons. In the previous 3 seasons, The Wire has had the habit of making the episode before the finale extra juicy and their finale's very boring and bland. Season 4 is all bland and ultimately is ALL set up for season 5. Don't expect any resolution to anything and any major plot lines start to come together at the end but only lead you on to season 5 (where there better be some showdowns and solutions). I enjoy the characters and their quirky personalities but my interest is constantly tested. Ultimately this is a 13 episode trailer for season 5..Score: 2/5

Another piece to a complete showKudos to iTunes for adding another season. At this rate, we will see Season Five at the same time it is released to DVD. I also love the fact that iTunes had the sense to allow customers time to finish a season before releasing the next. This works far better than putting it all out at one moment. People need to see this series in stages, in the proper season order...and iTunes has done this, which suggest to me that the folks at iTunes are fans of this show as well. If you buy this season, take the time to savor it. Watch each episode a couple of times to let everything sink in. It makes for a far richer season..Score: 5/5

The wire, or: how i learned to start thinking and love TVI am not a big fan of TV, generally. most programming is, in my opinion, a concerted waste of time and brain-space. however, i recently began watching HBO's show "The Wire"- a crime drama that takes place in Baltimore. i bought the first four seasons on itunes, figuring that between school, d.h. lawrence and my recent proclivity to sleep a lot, i could stay pretty busy through this time of reclusivity. what i discovered went far beyond entertainment, and entered into what i believe to be one of the most effective social critiques of the current era. i know that i look for different things from a medium such as television, things that most people- when simply wanting to zone out after a long day- find boring or incapable of holding their attention. i guess that is why i am writing this, trying to pimp out a creation that works much more like a great novel than typical television. but i do believe that The Wire is not only great, but something that does beyond the usual expectation of TV and expands into a very effective look at the problems facing America today. yes, it develops slowly. no, it is not very sexy. but, it uses a medium that has become the predominate means of communication today to actually SPEAK- to acknowledge the microcosms and macrocosms of very real problems which very much need addressing and reform. i think it brings one's view of ethics into focus, by a different story each season. anyway, it is getting late and i'm rambling, but i highly recommend watching this show. The Wire is expressive, superbly written and acted, and might just make you think a little too- something i don't often find among all those channels out there..Score: 5/5

Incredible. Worth Every PennyThe Wire is by far the most prolific series to ever grace the airwaves. I happened upon it and was hooked immediately. The Wire is truly a beautiful production in all aspects of the series. It's not action packed and it doesn't need to be. It is perfect the way it is, and watching this series will change your life. The only negative? It might just ruin every other series for you. It is THAT good. While all the seasons are worth every penny, Season 4 is my favorite. Compelling characters and a compelling story. Can't get enoughI feel like I have been let in on so many secrets watching this show. What drives decision-makers to corrupt behavior? With everything than mankind has achieved how are we capable of letting our cities decay into the quagmires of crime and degradation that they have become? How do good people manage to live a life in the face of such an impossible and demoralizing task? The thread that ties all the characters together in this remarkable essay is their will to survive. Some do survive, some don't and a lot of them have little chance of survival. Some accept their lot, some fight for something better; this is the story of modern day America. I am sad to have almost reached the end of the road with this show, but immensely excited about seeing season 5. Whatever happens this show leaves its mark on you like nothing I ever witnessed on television. Is it possible that the writers of this show can ever be held up along side the greatest social commentators of history; perhaps. The only thing preventing that is the fact that this is television and that we have been desentitized to its power by the 99.9 percent of crap it shows. Thanks god for 0.1%.Score: 5/5

Beautiful Series that captures the whole spiritThis wonderfully constructed poignant series is my favorite tv of all time. It's the closest to realism than any other. The characters are real and flawed but you still enjoy them greatly because they are so close to our own lives. Not only does it focus on the poverty and narcotic element of Baltimore, but it also gives us a broader perspective on government structure, the law enforcement, the dock industry and even the media as a whole. It's hard to not feel emotional throughout this series. The environment, deep thought-provoking story, the subtle tie ins and unforgettable characters make this series one you don't want to miss..Score: 5/5

Absolutely amazingI would rank this as the single greatest season of television (from arguably the greatest television series of all time) that I have ever seen, or am likely to ever see. Like with all previous seasons of The Wire, the steady build up of the series, with each episode representing a chapter in the story leads to a climax that overshadows anything that came before it, even including Stringer Bell and Avon Barksdale at the end of season 3.
